A HARARE man is suing for US$150,000 after he was misdiagnosed with HIV.
Wellington Tanaka Mangisi said his girlfriend ditched him after tests at the New Start Centre showed him to be HIV positive.

Mangisi’s lawyers have sent a demand letter to the Population Services Zimbabwe who run the New Start Centres.

He says the misdiagnosis was “irresponsible and negligent conduct by the New Start employees” and it caused him “trauma, stress and anguish”.

Mangisi says in his claim that he went to the New Start Centre in Kadoma’s Rimuka suburb to be tested for HIV with his girlfriend.

He was stunned when results came back showing him to be HIV positive while his girlfriend was given the all clear.

Mangisi, who has hired lawyer Wesley Khanda of Khanda and Company, says he immediately queried the results with a Ms Mhindu, pointing out that he had another test 24 hours earlier in Harare which gave a negative result.

Mhindu, the lawyers say, called her immediate supervisor, a Mr Dhlamini, who told Mangisi that he was in denial.

Dhlamini invited Mangisi back to the Centre on the following day for a new test to be carried out.

That second test was conducted by a Mr Mbono and proved his protestations were correct: he was not HIV positive.

Mangisi says Population Services Zimbabwe had initially agreed to settle out of court but have since backtracked. (Additional reporting RadioVoP)
