Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika is expected join Zambian Head of State Rupiah Banda and Mozambique’s President Armando Guebuza at year’s Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa in Zambia.

The ceremony will be held at Mkaika in Katete district on September 5. Initially the ceremony was supposed to take place on August 29 but has been shifted on request by Zambia Banda to allow him attend with Mutharika and Guebuza.

According to The Post of Zambia, Kulamba ceremony organising committee’s invitation and publicity secretary Lucas Phiri said the ceremony had been changed because it could prove difficult for the other invited presidents to attend in the absence of the host head of state.

“We have changed the dates for the ceremony from 29 August to 5 September, people might be asking as to why there are these changes, and the thing is that last year, we changed because of the death of late president [Levy] Mwanawasa and it was understood to all the people.

“This year, the ceremony has been changed because President Banda will be out on the 29 so he has asked that the ceremony be changed because he really wants to attend together with his colleagues,” Phiri told The Post.

In 2007, late president Mwanawasa, President Mutharika and President Guebuza attended the Kulamba traditional ceremony.
