UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has said President Rupiah Banda's government should be kicked out of power before 2011. Addressing a mammoth campaign rally in Chingola's Twatasha ward to drum up support for Patriotic Front (PF) candidate George Sichula ahead of this Thursday's ward by-election, Hichilema said the MMD government should be kicked out of power in 2010 because of the high levels of poverty the country had continued to face.
"We are not going to allow the MMD to divide us [PF-UPND pact]; we are going to kick them out of power in 2010 and not 2011. We do not want to see poverty," Hichilema said amid cheers from the crowd.
He said Zambians were suffering because of lack of serious leadership.
"The PF-UPND pact is going to form government to serve the people of Zambia. People of Zambia do not deserve the way they are suffering, Zambia is lacking serious leadership," Hichilema said.
He appealed to UPND members in Chingola to closely work with their colleagues from the PF and ensure that the PF candidate scoops the local government seat.
Hichilema said God loves Zambians and that this was why PF and UPND decided to come together and work as one.
"The people of Zambia are one, and we are not going to allow Zambians to be divided. That is why we decided to come together," he said.
Hichilema pledged to donate a cow and mealie-meal to the people of Twatasha ward for them to hold a celebration once the PF candidate scoped the seat.
The UPND leader, who had earlier in the day addressed another rally in Solwezi East, received a thunderous welcome by Chingola residents.
Business virtually came to a standstill as the convoy of the PF and UPND officials passed through the town centre.
Residents mostly women cheerfully waved at Hichilema who stood in his vehicle as he was driven to the rally site.
"Efyo twalefwaya, mubombele pamo naba Sata! [That's what we wanted, work together with Sata] shouted the women, men and youths who lined up in the streets while flashing both the PF and UPND symbols.
And in Solwezi's Kangwena ward where he also went to drum up support for UPND candidate Rabson Laishi, Hichilema said the MMD government had failed to provide people of Kangwena with agriculture inputs such as fertiliser to enable them grow enough food for their families.
He said once the PF and UPND pact formed government, it would provide people in rural areas with enough fertiliser for them to grow food for themselves.
Hichilema said the MMD government had failed to provide leadership to the people of Zambia.
"In a democracy when a party fails to run a country, they must step down," Hichilema said.
He said every day the MMD government spent billions of kwacha on less important things, adding that the K27 billion that was stolen from the Ministry of Health should have been used on constructing hospitals and clinics in various parts of the country.
Hichilema, who was accompanied by his vice -president Richard Kapita, UPND national youth chairman Joe Kalusa, UPND Copperbelt Province chairman Elisha Matambo and other national officials, also paid a courtesy call on chief Kalilele at his palace of Solwezi East.
