BOTSWANA'S Minister of Defence Dikgakgamatso Nelu Seretse has praised first Republican president Dr Kenneth Kaunda for showing confidence in his country when other frontline states had lost trust in that country for being close to South Africa during the liberation struggle.

During a closing cocktail party of the 14th Session of the Botswana/Zambia Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) on Defence and Security at Protea Hotel in Livingstone, Seretse said Dr Kaunda stood by Botswana's first president Sir Seretse Khama when he was called a puppet of South Africa.

He added that Zambia was the first nation under the frontline states to have confidence in his country.

"KK and Seretse soon proved to the frontline states that Botswana was a true friend and that despite being called a puppet of South Africa he [Dr Kaunda] was not going to abandon him [Khama]. Kaunda said that he was not going to†be compromised by the frontline states over Botswana, so our friendship between the two countries is significant,î he said.

Seretse added that despite the few criminal activities taking place between the two countries, the people of Botswana and Zambia viewed each other with respect.

"Our response to each other is great because of our understanding and respect and the way we view each other," said Seretse.
