Chibolya residents beat up DEC officers during a narcotics operations

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) have been injured after being beaten during an operation in Lusaka's Chibolya compound where they seized 200 sachets of cocaine.

DEC public relations and press liaison officer John Nyawali who confirmed the attack from Chibolya residents on his officers said four people including a 15 year old boy were arrested in connection with the trafficking of the narcotic drugs.

He stated that the cocaine together with other precursor powders was found in one of the houses.

ÒAdditionally millions of kwacha believed to be proceeds of the illegal trade was also seized. The four are currently detained in police custody and will appear in court soon,Ó he said.

Nyawali also expressed disappointment with the people of Chibolya compound for fighting running battles with DEC officers.

He stated that residents of Chibolya fought and injured some officers when they conducted the operation in the areas.

Nyawali stated that officers had repeatedly come under life threatening attacks whenever they conducted operations in Chibolya area.

He warned that the Commission would not tolerate such barbaric behaviour and that next time maximum force would be used to safeguard the lives of officers if they tried to shield officers.

Nyawali stated that 24 people across the country who included a businesswoman of Mansa in Luapula had been arreested for trafficking in Diazapam and cannabis with a total weight of 150 respectively.
