THE DRUG Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a headman of Mugolo village in chief Mwanza’s area in Monze for cultivating 2.8 tonnes of fresh cannabis.
In a press statement released yesterday, DEC public relations and liaison officer John Nyawali stated that Atulade Mweembe was arrested together with five other peasant farmers of the same area.
“The cannabis was uprooted from three fields with an approximate area of five hectares,” Nyawali stated.
And DEC has also arrested a 14-year-old grade seven pupil of Mwapona Community School in Choma for drug trafficking.
“The juvenile was found selling cannabis which he claimed was for his guardian who gave him to sell on his behalf,” Nyawali stated.
“The Commission would like to express sadness with the increasing number of juveniles being used as drug couriers. As such, we would like to appeal to members of the public to help curb the trend which is gradually affecting the future leaders of our nation.”
Meanwhile, the DEC has arrested 27 people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.
Among those arrested include a 62-year-old man of George compound in Lusaka for cultivating 125 kilogrammes of cannabis.
Nyawali stated that all the suspects are currently detained in police custody and will appear in court soon.
