AFRICA and South America must fight to improve the standards of living, FAO director general Jacques Diouf has urged. Attending the Second Africa and South American (II ASA) heads of state and government summit here in Venezuela, Diouf said estimates indicated that the world population would reach 9.2 billion people by 2050.
He said Africa and South America were brotherly peoples that must now fight to improve the standard of living in the world. Diouf said in particular, the ASA region must fight poverty. He said it was unfortunate that the number of hungry people in the world had increased.
Diouf said this was happening while estimates indicated that the world population would grow from 6.5 billion to 9.2 billion people by 2050.
He said that called for doubling the worldÃs food production.
Diouf said increasing food production two-fold required joint efforts.
He urged the II ASA Summit to discuss such initiatives, actions and strategies to increase food production in ASA member countries.
Diouf also announced that the FAO summit of heads of state and government would be held from November 16 to 18 to adopt policies and programmes aimed at allocating resources for concrete projects, and to discuss issues pertaining to promoting food security.
