RECOVERY of the economy is guaranteed after the formation of the inclusive Government, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe has said.
ICAZ president Ms Emilia Chisango made the remark at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Zimbabwe for a partnership in offering a Certificate in Theoretical Accounting.
She said with an economic recovery that is certain the country needed more skilled labour to fill in the gap created by the brain drain triggered by economic instability.
"With the inclusive Government in our stead, economic recovery is guaranteed and our country needs more skilled labour than ever to fill the gap that has been created by the exodus of our graduates, hence the need to train more people to fill the gaps that have been left," said Ms Chisango.
Ms Chisango said ICAZ and the UZ have contributed immensely towards the available pool of resources that industry taps into and would keep doing so for nation building.
The partnership between ICAZ and the UZ comes in the wake of reports that 900 chartered accounts registered with ICAZ had left the country for greener pastures.
ICAZ and the University of Zimbabwe signed an MoU, which would see the latter offering the Certificate in Theoretical Accounting hitherto offered by Unisa.
The Certificate in Theoretical Accounting is a prelude course for students wishing to study with the institute to become professional chartered accountants or articled accountants.
Ms Chisango said the University of Zimbabwe had come of age and should now be able to offer the course full time.
Currently, students wishing to study with ICAZ to become chartered accountants study with Unisa through distance learning.
The partnership between the two institutions would become fully operational by mid next year to allow setting up of the necessary administrative and technical structures.
University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor Professor Levy Nyagura concurred that the university had gained enough experience to deliver desired results in this partnership.
"The university is now as good as any other foreign institution.
"Unisa played an important role in the region in terms of human resources development. But you get to a point where you say this person is now mature enough to do that as well.
"We are very delighted with the private sector expressing recognition that the University of Zimbabwe has got capacity to deliver based on our international mark of very high standards," he said.
Professor Nyagura said the fact that the two institutions would work together would have a multiplier effect that would see them producing students of the highest quality.
He said the UZ was there to do "things that will make the economy tick".
The MoU marks the second time the two institutions would work together having first collaborated at independence for a Diploma in Applied Accounts, which the UZ ran.
ICAZ is a member of numerous regional and international chartered accountancy bodies and works closely with South Africa Institute of Chartered Accountants.
