A 36-year-old Harare woman allegedly defrauded two farmers of 61 tonnes of maize valued at US$14 000 after misrepresenting to them that she was an agent for Peak Trading.

Mercy Hapiness Masvikepi (36) pleaded not guilty to fraud charges when she appeared before magistrate Mr Don Ndirowei, who remanded her out of custody to November 2 on US$50 bail.

Mr Ndirowei ordered her to reside at her given address, not to interfere with State witnesses and to report once every week at Harare Central Police Station.

Prosecutor Ms Tinashe Kanyemba said sometime in September this year, Masvikepi placed an advertisement in a local newspaper indicating that she was the general manager of Peak International.

It is alleged that through Farmet, a farmers’ organisation, Masvikepi contacted Ms Sibusisiwe Munyaradzi and indicated to her she wanted to buy her maize.

Munyaradzi told Ms Masvikepi that she had 30 tonnes of maize at US$255 per tonne, the court heard.

It is the State’s case that the maize was delivered to Peak Trading premises in Southerton and Ms Munyaradzi was supposed to be paid after four days.

However, the court heard, four days elapsed without any payment.

On the second count, Masvikepi allegedly defrauded a Shamva farmer, Mr Nesbert Chauraya, of 31 164 tonnes of maize that he was selling at US$265 per tonne.

Masvikepi allegedly promised to pay after four days and again no money changed hands, it is alleged.
