President Bingu wa Mutharika has said he is aware of the moving tale of a Malawian who used scraps to build a windmill to power his family and elevate the lives and spirits of those in his community.

William Kamkwamba, at the age of 14 built an electricity-producing windmill from spare parts and scrap working from rough plans he found in a library book called Using Energy and modifying them to fit his needs. Kamkwamba’s story is now in book he has authored and selling at Amazon, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

“I know the story and I’m going to see him soon.”

“I am always thrilled to see this kind of innovation,” pointed out Mutharika in an interview on AllAfrica.com.

“From time to time you get young people with bright ideas. There was also someone who had his own small hydro-power plant for his village. It’s encouraging to see that kind of innovation among the youth,” said the President.
