PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe says the land is sacred and the onus is on every Zimbabwean to fight for it and not return it to erstwhile colonisers. He added that Zimbabwean land belongs to chiefs as they are the custodians of our culture. President Mugabe was speaking at the installation of chief Zvimba who was previously known as Stanley Urayayi Mhondoro.

He said most of the sacred land had been confiscated from tribes by the colonisers and it was important that the land be returned. It was through the chiefs that this was possible, he added.

Land grabbed from Zimbabweans included graveyards and fertile farming lands that were important to traditional Zimbabwean society. He said the chiefs are the senior citizens of society and deserve to be respected.

Chief Zvimba is a businessman, farmer, former journalist, and a war veteran who took over from the late Chief Zvimba who died in 2002. There has been an acting chief for the past seven years.

President Mugabe emphasised that the land is sacred and warned those who employ deceitful tactics to return it to former colonisers saying it will not happen again.

Chief Fortune Charumbira, President of the Council of Chiefs said chiefs are born chiefs and don’t disengage like politicians and their mandate encompasses everything that has to do with people.

The installation was conducted by Local Government Minister Dr Ignatious Chombo.
