(TALKZIMBABWE) MDC-T overstretching limits on Bennett, Cross

MDC-T overstretching limits on Bennett, Cross

DEAR EDITOR - As a Christian I would not personally have a problem with the forgiving of killers (during colonization and white miority rule), but am quite aware of the deep resentment this may be to the victims' families.

I also understand that Eddie Cross (MDC-T Policy Co-ordinator) and Roy Bennett (Treasurer-General) were not just citizens in a regime that was brutal against majority blacks, but active participants.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC-T must surely know and understand the political symbolism of Cross now claiming to be repentant enough to claim moral high ground over today’s very democratic government by colonial standards.
I honestly do not accept that Tsvangirai and MDC-T are not aware of dangerous emotions evoked by having the likes of Cross and Bennett now turn around and lecture Zimbabweans on human rights.

There is no record in our history of Cross and Bennett lobbying their government despite having ninety-nine percent not having any rights let alone recognized as human.

I have no objection to Cross and Bennett belonging to a party of their choice, but having them championing Zimbabwe's human rights divides us as a nation more than it unites us.

Naturally, common sense should have informed MDC-T to be sensitive on these appointments because not only are they provocative but they are also a threat to national healing and reconciliation.

I also question the personal wisdom and integrity of Cross and Bennett for not caring to be discreet about their political engagements.

Tsvangirai and MDC-T may be overstretching the limits of reconciliation by ignoring the political symbolism of giving influential public roles to former active members of the evil, brutal and repressive colonial regime.

As much as we all wished discrimination dead and buried, Tsvangirai and MDC-T's recent record does not inspire any confidence that Thamsanqa Mahlangu, who is the MDC Youth Assembly Chairperson, is treated the same way as Bennett.

Neither can you be regarded as naive for suspecting Bennett and Cross to champion the revival of the same racist tendencies from within MDC-T if at all they ever gave up on them.
