POLICE in Zimbabwe have arrested two officials from the National Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (Nango) for allegedly holding an illegal political meeting over the weekend.
Dadirai Chikwengo, chairwoman of the organization, and Chief Executive Officer Cephas Zinhumwe were detained at Victoria Falls airport yesterday, Farai Ngirande, the group’s spokesman, said in a phone interview today from the capital, Harare.
Police charges against the two stemmed from the statement issued by the directors, after attending an annual two-day Directors' Summer School, in which they called for the intervention of Sadc and the AU in the political process in Zimbabwe.
Part of the statement issued by the directors said the Zimbabwe political environment was characterised by "fear and denial of basic human rights" and that there were "continued threats and incitement against representatives of the (NGO) sector".
Sources in the capital say the two are to be charged under POSA for holding the meeting. It is understood that the two were in police custody and were expected to appear in court today (Monday October 26 2009).
Police in Victoria Falls did not answer calls to their offices when the Zimbabwe Guardian called for comment.
