COPPERBELT UNIP chairperson Isa Zgambo has said it is not possible for the party to hold its national congress within seven days as per ultimatum issued by former acting secretary general Reverend Alfred Banda.
Commenting on Rev Banda's ultimatum, Zgambo said UNIP could not hold its national congress immediately because it had no structures that comprised its electoral college.
He said the lack of structures to form the Electoral College was in part caused by Rev Banda because he failed to organise elections around the country for the party's district and provincial leadership.
Zgambo said if Rev Banda had a programme at the time he served as acting secretary general, he would have left the structures in place and rightfully demand that a UNIP national congress be held in seven days.
He cited Copperbelt which had so far only elected leaders in three districts and remained with seven.
Zgambo said for UNIP to hold its national congress, it needed to quickly organise elections in districts and at provincial level that would make up the Electoral College mandated by the party's constitution to vote for national leaders.
Rev Banda gave UNIP a seven-day ultimatum to hold its national congress failure to which he would go on hunger strike.
