Pohamba commissions water plant - by Albertina Nakale

SWAKOPMUND- President Hifikepunye Pohamba and Anne Lauvergeon, the Chief Executive Officer of AREVA Group, on Wednesday commissioned a water desalination plant worth N$1 billion, some 30 kilometres north of Swakopmund.

The ceremony was witnessed by several ministers, diplomats, and the Governor of the Erongo Region, Samuel Nuuyoma, the Deputy Minister of Justice, Utoni Nuuyoma, Minister of Mines and Energy, Errki Nghimtina as well as the town mayors of Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Arandis.

The commissioning of the desalination plant is an essential step in the project because through a battery of tests that will be run until mid-2010, it will ensure that the plant is ready to produce potable water.

Once operational, the plant will produce potable water in sufficient quantities to allow AREVA to operate the Trekkopje mine.

Excess production may also serve local communities.

The desalination plant is an integral part of the mining project that AREVA is developing in Namibia and an illustration of the group’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility, says the chief company’s executive.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba welcomed the venture, saying it will contribute to the economic and industrial development of the country while creating new employment opportunities for peopleand creating a new source of fresh water.

The new plan will also boost the availability of fresh potable water.

Pohamba said these resources would enable the country to achieve the objectives of Vision 2030 and all its strategic goals if they are exploited in a systematic manner and managed effectively.

Lauvergeon reaffirmed AREVA’s commitment to the development of the desalination plant, as a catalyst to the success of the Trekkopje mine.
