Malawi’s newly elected Leader of Opposition, Ephraim Kayembe, has said Malawi Congress Party (MCP) will form the next government in 2014 elections but said John Tembo would not be the ideal torch bearer. Kayembe said he is confident that MCP will win the next elections and people are agitating for change.

“Because of the support that is coming from people I am confident. The people in Malawi want to move with change of time,” said the Leader of Opposition who defeated MCP president Tembo to ascend to the position in parliament after being voted by government.

Kayembe said MCP membership have lost trust on Tembo “as someone who can lead the party successfully so that we go back in government.”

He blamed Tembo for the bad results of MCP in the May elections.

“The mighty MCP under the leadership of Tembo has been reduced to the MCP within Lilongwe and maybe Dedza so we don’t want such kind of situation,” said Kayembe.

He said MCP task force for leadership change is looking at opening the new political chapter and build the party in readiness for 2014.

“As MCP what we are saying is that this is the time for us to move with the time.” He added: “Time for the change that we have been talking about is now. We will not wait for 2014 for us to organize the party. The time to organize the party is now.”

Kayembe however said he does not harbor ambitions to be MCP presidential candidate in 2014.

“I don’t have ambitions. What I am interested in is to work effectively as Leader of Opposition to assist government and Malawian people to benefit from development projects.

“In 2014 I will stand as a parliamentary candidate for MCP because I am MCP. As party leadership, it’s the people that are responsible,” he said.

Kayembe was speaking during an interview monitored by Nyasa Times on Capital Radio’s Straight Talk programmme hosted by Brian Banda.
