The Government is happy with progress achieved so far in clearing refuse dumps in residential areas and the busy Mbare Musika and bus terminus.

After a tour of Mbare and Highfield yesterday, Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo lauded city authorities for their commitment in cleaning up the city.

Minister Chombo chairs the Cabinet committee on cholera and has in recent weeks urged Harare and surrounding towns to remove garbage and avoid a recurrence of last year’s cholera outbreak that killed thousands of people.

"The city is now looking better. We want to commend the city council for a job well done more so during the holiday.

"Refuse was cleared during the weekend, genuine progress has been made so far," he said.

Minister Chombo said the Government, through its various departments, would do everything possible to help Harare regain its Sunshine City status.

"We continue to plead with ministries of Transport, Defence and Home Affairs to provide us with transport," he added.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Emmanuel Chiroto said new refuse equipment would be received within the first two weeks of January.

"Tender letters have already been dispatched and by the end of the week the council will be operating on full throttle.

"We also resolved to urgently purchase refuse bags so we can effectively collect waste," he said.

Clr Chiroto urged traders and residents to be responsible and avoid dumping litter everywhere.

"It is every resident’s duty to ensure that the city is kept clean, traders at all vending sites should make sure that their working spaces are clean.

"We want to ensure that the cholera outbreak which occurred last year does not recur."

Acting Town Clerk Dr Prosper Chonzi said the clean-up campaign was rolled to all suburbs.

"We have a huge challenge, but we are happy that Government helped with resources to effectively carry out our mandate. Various Government departments have provided tipper trucks and other forms of transport," he said.
