ZAMBEEF Products Plc is seriously considering establishing a ‘Zamfish subsidiary’ following the development of various large fish ponds at the company’s Chiawa farm estate in the lower Zambezi valley.
Company chief executive officer Carl Irwin said there were 26 ponds meant for fish farming but plans were underway to start the project on a commercial basis.
“About establishing Zamfish as a subsidiary, it is possible and it is something that will be considered in the near future especially that fish is a source of cheap protein but like any proposal, to start full time commercial farming, is something that will be looked at since it looks viable in the long term,” said Irwin.
And Kafue member of parliament who is also livestock and fisheries minister Bradford Machila said several developmental projects would be undertaken in the area once a bridge was constructed across the Kafue River.
“The pontoon gives challenges to development and market access and once a bridge is completed, people will see huge benefits, not only in agriculture, but tourism and many other sectors and we are happy that construction of the bridge will start next year since most outstanding issues have been resolved,” said Machila.
And on the palm oil plantation in Mpika, Irwin said Zampalm was a very ambitious project that would change the livelihoods of many people as well as contributing to the country’s oil requirements.
“So far we have planted 3,000 hectares of palm trees at the 20,000 hectare-farm and upon full development, the farm will have a factory with modern machinery to process the seeds into oil. Right now, we are developing farms, road network, water reservoirs and many other projects required at a large scale commercial farm,” said Irwin.
