The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested four people in Samfya district in Luapula Province for being in possession of chemicals and materials used in the manufacturing of counterfeit notes. The four, who include two women, were also found with three bundles of paper materials, which they wanted to process into K50 000 and $100 notes.

This is according to a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by DEC press liaison officer John Nyawali. Nyawali said the four, who are residents of Riverside extension in Kitwe, were travelling to Nchelenge where they wanted to process the counterfeits from.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the four also visited Kabompo, Kasempa and Solwezi districts in North Western Province.

Nyawali said the quartet was currently in police custody and would appear in court soon.
This comes barely a week after the arrest of Richard Nzala, an officer in the Zambia Security Intelligence Service who was arrested in Lusaka for possessing over US $ 70,000.

And Nyawali said the Commission seized 2.2 tonnes of cannabis in the last four days and 18 people were arrested countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of the psychotropic substance.

He said among those arrested is a 63-year-old security guard at Chimsoro Milling in Mansa who was found selling cannabis.
