UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has described the appointment of Dora Siliya as MMD spokesperson as a mess-up.

Commenting on the appointment of Siliya as party spokesperson, Hichilema said Siliya, who is also education minister, had a negative public image.

“I think that's an MMD matter and they should make their own decisions and I would have no issue with that. Obviously, Dora has some legacy issue, some issues of Zamtel, so really that's up to them, if that's the image they want to project to the public,” Hichilema said.

“...That is the image they want, a negative image because definitely Dora has a negative image arising from the way she handled Zamtel. And basically in education she hasn't done well at all. But you know when the gods want to destroy somebody, they make them make the wrong decisions all the time.”

He said the appointment of Siliya and Chembe Nyangu as deputy national secretary, who both hail from Eastern Province, confirms how President Banda's mind works.

“It's also useful to comment that Dora is now the party spokesperson for MMD but also they have removed Jeff Kaande and put a guy Nyangu from Rupiah's home Eastern Province. So the party spokesperson is from Rupiah's home, the new deputy national secretary is from Rupiah's home. All the ministers, all the MPs there and ministers from his home,” Hichilema said.

“It is just a further confirmation of how Rupiah's mind works. Only his clansmen, to him, must be taking national roles. I am told he is gunning for home affairs minister Lameck Mangani to take over the security portfolio in MMD maybe to help himself in putting clansmen around so that he could win the election even by rigging.

“Mangani is at home affairs, now he is supposed to be, we understand, the head of the MMD security. Otherwise, let them mess themselves up, we shall be watching. But our space will be occupied by doing gainful work to conscientise the people of Zambia to deliver change in 2011.”

Over the weekend, MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba announced that the ruling party had re-organised itself by bringing into the national executive committee (NEC) former national secretary Vernon Mwaanga, Siliya, former Nyimba member of parliament Nyangu, and losing Solwezi Central member of parliament Albert Chifita. Jeff Kaande was dropped as party deputy national secretary.
