DOUGLAS MWONZORA, the Co-Chairperson of the key Parliamentary Constitutional Commission meant to oversee the drafting of a new constitution for Zimbabwe has been charged with insulting President Mugabe by calling him a goblin, lawyers have confirmed.

Mwonzora, a parliamentarian for prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) allegedly told MDC-T supporters at a political rally that President Mugabe was a goblin. The politician faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail if found guilty.

In Zimbabwean traditional mythology goblins are feared, hideous creatures with evil powers.

Mwonzora made the remarks nearly a year ago ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections but was only summoned on Monday this week, said lawyer Lewis Uriri.

MDC-T officials, who have now become notorious for defending criminals within their party, said the charges against Mwonzora were deliberate harassment by President Mugabe's security agents.

The party has in the past defended criminals who redirected farm inputs meant for communal farmers. Many of them later pleaded guilty and sentenced. The MDC-T has also recently admitted corruption in their party after they had dismissed it as attempts by Zanu PF to discredit their party.

The entire UK Executive of the MDC-T party was dissolved after allegations of theft of tens of thousands of dollars. The current ambassadorial nominee for Germany, Hebson Makuvise, who is from the MDC-T party is said to have misappropriated or misdirected thousands of pounds meant for party business.
