A nurse at Mangochi District Hospital, well known for her high level and uncensored rudeness saw the earth turning upside down last Saturday after irate guardians descended upon and baptized her with some slaps, Nyasa Times has understood.

The nurse, identified as Trina Ng’ambi, met her fate for allegedly neglecting a critically-ill patient, who later died, Mangochi District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Maurice Mulenga confirmed.

On the day of the incident, the nurse refused openly to attend to the patient claiming she was tired and a few minutes later the patient died a development that angered the guardians.

After the patient died, the guardian became furious and started slapping the nurse. Other people who were in the ward also joined him in giving lessons to the nurse.

Dr Mulenga said the nurse had been suspended pending investigations over the matter and other reports of ill treating the patients.

“I indeed received complainants against the nurse and she has indeed been suspended pending investigations by the Appointments and Disciplinary Committee,” said Dr Mulenga.

Reports indicate that Ng’ambi is so rude to patients, particularly to pregnant mothers who she sometimes slaps and calls them all sorts of names.

The nurse even shouts at the expectant mothers telling them “Am I the one who made you pregnant.”

In an interview, Executive Director of Nurses and Midwives Organisation in Malawi, Dorothy Ng’oma (pictured), said her office had heard about the nurse conduct but was yet to get a report on her suspension.

“I cannot comment at the moment until I get a report on that,” she said.
