CHIEFTAINESS Chiawa of the Goba people of Lusaka Province fears there will be food insecurity in her chiefdom because of the bad rainfall pattern.

In an interview yesterday, chieftainess Chiawa said the dry spell which Chiawa experienced dried most crops.

“There was drought in Chiawa when other parts of the country were receiving rains but again when rains started, they have been very heavy and have destroyed my people’s crops which were replanted during the drought period,” she said.

Chieftainess Chiawa called on the Partnership with Investment Project, a project where agribusiness technical assistance is offered to local farmers, to continue supporting the villagers with fertiliser, seed and farming equipment so that food insecurity is reduced.

“When investors saw the seriousness of farmers who had cleared land, they gave them caterpillars, seed and fertiliser and such projects are important because they reduce hunger,” she said.

Chieftainess Chiawa said the project has seen men and women do rotational guarding of their crops during day and night time so that they are not destroyed by hippos.

She said about 500x50 kilogrammes of maize were harvested during the last farming season from the same project.
