UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has urged people in public positions to support artistes when they are still alive.
During the funeral service for artiste and Muvi TV director of programmes Augustine Lungu at the Cathedral of Holy Cross yesterday, Hichilema urged other artistes to emulate Lungu’s works.
“Life is never complete with just hard work…without the component of leisure, Augustine drew our attention when he did a play or interviewed you… You needed to do some homework when you were about to be interviewed by him,” Hichilema said.
Lusaka Province minister Charles Shawa said Lungu was a multi-talented person.
Shawa said Lungu always shared his knowledge without any attachments.
Meanwhile, mourners broke down when Lungu’s children paid their last tribute.
And former National Arts Council of Zambia chairman Mumba Kapumpa caused laugher in church when he told the gathering that he had become a born again Christian.
Kapumpa urged artistes to seek the Lord when they were still alive because no amount of preaching would save them when they were dead.
“Augustine knew the Lord just like me. In case you think I’m still the same chap you saw dancing to Rhumba music a couple of years ago, you are mistaken because I knew the Lord in 2003,” Kapumpa said.
Thousands of mourners among them government officials and opposition leaders turned up at the church service to pay their last respects to Lungu.
Lungu, who was born on December 12, 1970, died last week on Friday and is survived by a wife Kamwengo and four children.
