Malema to study nationalisation on Zimbabwe visit

SOUTH Africa’s ruling African National Congress says a four-day visit to Zimbabwe by its youth leader Julius Malema, starting Friday, will in part be a “study programme” on nationalisation. Malema, an advocate for the nationalisation of mines, is set to meet with his Zanu PF counterparts before paying a courtesy call on President Robert Mugabe on Monday.

“The ANC Youth League delegation will be hosted by Zanu PF Youth and constitutes part of strengthening relations with former liberation movements and will provide both the ANC Youth League and Zanu PF Youth a platform to share information on programmes to build a better Africa and world,” Floyd Shivambu, the Youth League’s spokesman said on Monday.

Malema’s delegation will include the ANC Youth League’s deputy secretary general Steven Ngobeni and treasurer general Pule Mabe, said Shivambu, who is also travelling.

He added: “The visit will also be utilised to popularise South Africa’s hosting of the World Festival for Youth and Students in December 2010.

“The visit will also incorporate the ANC Youth League’s study-tour programme of visiting countries that have succeeded or failed with nationalisation of and greater State participation in sectors of their economies.

“The study-tours will proceed to China, Chile, Venezuela, Brazil and Cuba.”

Malema, tipped to one day lead South Africa by the incumbent Jacob Zuma, is courting controversy at home after taking on the powerful mining industry with his call for nationalisation.

Zanu PF championed a 2008 law limiting foreign shareholding in big firms. The law will be most felt in mining and banking.
