Our loyalty mustn’t be blind- Chituwo

OUR loyalty to the head of institutions must not be blind, science and technology minister Dr Brian Chituwo has advised.

Reacting to Lusaka Province MMD chairman William Banda’s recent statement that some Cabinet ministers and national executive committee (NEC) members were undermining President Rupiah Banda, Dr Chituwo said constructive loyalty was important.

“Loyalty, especially from me who comes from the army is very important. We have to be loyal to our head of institutions but our loyalty should not be blind,” Dr Chituwo said.

He said it was unfortunate that a provincial chairman could address his colleagues in the manner William Banda did. He said as one of the people that attends NEC meetings, William Banda should have raised the issues in these meetings.

“There is a forum where he should have brought up those issues…in terms of procedure I will be making a mistake to discuss the content of his statement to you before we meet as NEC,” Dr Chituwo said.

“I believe when a colleague has erred you don’t have to repeat the same mistake so this issue will be discussed in the NEC meeting. But when it comes to party issues, we have Dora Siliya our spokesperson to speak on behalf of the party. As regards the issue of Mr William, it would be wise to leave that issue to NEC.”

And Dr Chituwo disclosed that his ambitions to become Republican President had died. He said he had no intentions of becoming a presidential candidate for the 2011 elections.

“…My ambition to become president is dead, first of all decisions of that nature have to be done through consultations so for now I have no intentions to be a presidential candidate for 2011 but I will see in 2016, we shall cross the bridge when we get there,” Dr Chituwo said.

Dr Chituwo said he had served enough in the public sector and that he was grateful to the late president Levy Mwanawasa for according him the opportunity to be in his Cabinet.

“I believe I have made some contributions to this nation…the health sector is better now than the way it was eight years ago. Contribution to one’s nation does not mean one has to be president. I believe you can do better even when you are not a president as long as your job is done collectively,” said Dr Chituwo.
