DEAR EDITOR - Switzerland at the weekend renewed sanctions against Zimbabwe. The statement released by that country's foreign ministry would leave one thinking this country has a clean record when it comes to human rights.

“The measures include a prohibition on supply of military equipment and materials which might be used for internal repression and targeted financial sanctions, such as freezing of assets owned by the 160-plus individuals in Switzerland,” the ministry said.

Many of us who are old enough to remember the role of the Swiss government in international relations are shocked by such grandstanding.

Switzerland played a key role in building the nuclear weapons of South Africa’s former Apartheid regime and helped many perpetrators of human rights violations around the world to bank in that country.

Like the rest of Europe, Switzerland sees the crisis in Zimbabwe as a race issue. They want land to be returned to white commercial farmers.

Germany was among the countries that also played a role in perpertuating Apartheid.

Zimbabweans will not be deterred in their fight for self-determination and its sovereignty will not be threatened by such actions. We have endured sanctions for ten years and are not about to give up.
