ECZ approves 50 projects

THE Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) has approved 50 projects and rejected two, which include the proposed fuel storage depot at the Livingstone International Airport by BP Zambia Limited.

ECZ principal information and communication officer Irene Lungu stated yesterday that the proposed expansion project on Lake Kariba in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province by Maaza Holdings had equally been rejected.

Lungu stated that among the approved projects from January to March 2010 in agriculture included a proposed construction of a diary processing plant by the Choma district dairy cooperative union and the proposed water pipeline by Zambeef Products Plc at Chiawa Farms by Zambeef Products Plc.

In the mining field, the proposed Kabasa mine in Mansa by Bangweulu Batteries Limited, prospecting in the Gwembe Valley by ERA Power and Infrastructure Zambia Limited, smelter expansion project in Chambishi by Chambishi Copper Smelter Limited and the proposed and revised Konkola North Mine and Concentration project by Konnoco Zambia Limited (Teal Minerals (Barbados) Incorporated) had been approved.

Lungu stated that in the energy sector 12 projects had been approved which included the environmental project brief for a service station and shopping mall in Chibombo by Fame Logistics Limited, the proposed Lunzua Power station upgrade project Zesco Limited, stand No. 6949, the proposed Kabwe-Lusaka road 33 Kv line reinforcement project by Zesco Limited, the proposed Lusiwasi hydropower station rehabilitation and upgrade project in Serenje district by Zesco Limited, the proposed development of SGC service station in Chingola by SCG Investment Limited and the proposed construction of Alpha filling station in Mkushi by Alpha Enterprises.

She stated that others included the proposed installation of a bulk fuel storage depot on stand No. 36991, off Mungwi Road in Lusaka by Petrotech Oil Corporation Limited, the proposed filling station in Solwezi by Mwepu Investments Technology Limited, the proposed Chawama Service Station offices and minimart in Lusaka By Petroda Zambia Limited, the proposed Kasangula Road service station and minimart project in Lusaka by Petroda Limited.

Others are the proposed construction of the 72 kilometers long 66 kV transmission power line by Mkushi Copper Joint Venture Limited (MCJVL) in Mkushi district and the proposed installation of fuel storage tank facility in Lusaka by MTN Zambia.

In the processing and manufacturing field, ECZ had approved 14 projects while for urban development three projects had been approved.

Lungu stated that for tourism, seven projects had been approved while for the road, transport and communication field road rehabilitation for Lundazi, Chipata and Katete districts by Huachang Infrastructure Engineering Zambia Limited had been approved.

Lungu stated that in forestry, two projects had been approved and also the proposed mobile health services in Zambia by the Ministry of Health.
