UPND Zambezi West parliamentarian Charles Kakoma (left) has said there is nothing to be excited about the MMD government’s intention to tar the Mutanda-Chavuma road because the promises have been made since independence in 1964.

Dismissing assertions by MMD members of parliament for Chavuma Kenneth Konga and his Mwinilunga West counterpart Elijah Muchima that the opposition in the province were against the project, Kakoma said people were tired of empty promises and wanted action.

“We want this road to be tarred and we have been fighting for this to happen but to no avail. Imagine this promise has been made for the past 45 years and people are tired because there is nothing new to be excited about and it appears that government promises to tar the road when there are elections and they did it during the Solwezi by-elections and nothing came out of those empty promises,” Kakoma said.

He said the MMD government’s response to development in North Western Province was very disappointing.

“Government is not sincere and this is why their promises do not come to fruition since they keep reducing budgets for this same road. For instance, they have allocated K37 billion but engineers will tell you that this amount will only tar seven kilometers,” said Kakoma.

“And we opposition members of parliament keep on fighting them because we want this development since it will spring up other economic activities but the MMD government is not serious and they just want to be making empty promises.”

President Rupiah Banda recently directed finance minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane to look for funds to tar major roads in some parts of the country including the Mutanda-Chavuma road in North Western Province.
