WOMEN For Change (WfC) executive director Emily Sikazwe has disclosed that ‘The Zambia We Want Campaign’ will embark on activities aimed at collecting people’s views on the Zambia they want, which would then culminate in the development of the charter.

Sikazwe yesterday said the charter would focus on mutual accountability by both the leaders and the citizens.

“The charter will also focus on principles and values to inform important national development processes. This charter will be a tool for engaging political party leaders, other duty bearers and the general citizenry on their commitment to development,” she said.

Sikazwe said the charter would demand development discourse and practice dominated by action towards the realis ation of the collective aspirations of the Zambian people.

Sikazwe said the objectives of the campaign included promoting a meaningful citizen-leaders dialogue based on mutual accountability, where the general citizenry elected leaders and government officials will be held accountable for their actions.

Others are empowering citizens to demand from elected representatives, the operationalisation of the ‘Zambia We Want Charter’ and developing a mechanism to facilitate the continuous monitoring of the progress towards the achievement of electoral promises.

She said the campaign would comprise the joint efforts of several movements, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and Faith Based Organisations (FBOs) who are determined to bring about a better Zambia.

Sikazwe said the main goal of the campaign was to develop a culture and mechanism for a people-led and focused sustainable social, economic and political development. Sikazwe also welcomed the launch of various campaigns saying they were needed because Zambia had a lot of problems.

“The more campaigns we have, the better because Zambia has a lot of problems, its good that our nation can see an issue and express themselves through campaigns…however, campaigns will come and go but what we need is a shared vision that is the Zambia We Want,” said Sikazwe.
