POLICE are still waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Chalwe Mchenga in the case where Kajilo Muzungu allegedly run over and caused the death of three people in Mufumbwe two weeks after he handed himself to police.
And police in Solwezi on Tuesday last week recorded a statement from UPND North Western provincial information and publicity secretary Adam Sapezo in connection with the violence that characterised last month’s by-elections in Mufumbwe.
Kajilo, the son to MMD losing candidate in the Mufumbwe by-election Mulondwe Muzungu, has been charged with three counts of causing death by dangerous driving and his matter is supposed to be taken to the High Court.
Police spokesperson Bonny Kapeso yesterday said Kajilo had appeared in the subordinate court for mention but had not taken plea.
He said Kajilo was on police bond.
“We are waiting for instructions from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before the case could be committed to the High Court,” said Kapeso when asked on whether Kajilo had appeared in court or not.
In the early hours of April 30, 2010, Kajilo who was driving from the western to eastern direction bashed five people on the Mutanda Chavuma road in Mufumbwe.
Two children died on the spot while three sustained serious injuries.
The third person died later in hospital.
Kajilo ploughed through a crowd of people that had lined the road celebrating Elliot Kamondo’s victory in the Mufumbwe by-election.
And Sapezo yesterday confirmed that Solwezi police summoned him on Tuesday last week.
“I was there from 14:30 to 18:00 hours. At the station, there was the DCIO District Criminal Investigations Officer Mr. Chibuye, then later he referred me to a lady who took a statement from me,” he said.
Sapezo explained that police wanted to know when he went to Mufumbwe, where he was on the polling day and also asked him to lead them to the cadres that allegedly beat up a ‘police officer’.
He wondered why police were interviewing him on these issues when they knew very well that he was a polling agent and was at the same station with the second DCIO.
Sapezo also wondered why police had not arrested any of the thugs that attacked Zambezi West member of parliament Charles Kakoma despite knowing who they were.
“That is why we are saying that we are going to demonstrate should we hear that they have charged Muzungu’s son Kajilo with causing death by dangerous driving. That was not dangerous driving, it was intentional and it is murder,” said Sapezo.
When contacted on the nature of the statement recorded from Sapezo, North Western police commanding officer Fabian Katiba promised to get more details over the matter as he was not aware of it.
Last week, police interviewed UPND Copperbelt Province chairman Elisha Matambo over what transpired in Mufumbwe.
The ruling MMD has constantly accused the UPND of perpetrating violence in Mufumbwe but the UPND maintained that the violence was caused by MMD.
