AGRICULTURE deputy minister Allan Mbewe has praised North Western Province for the bumper harvest it has recorded for the 2009/2010 farming season.

Gracing this year’s Kasempa district agriculture and commercial show, Mbewe assured farmers that come next year, production would increase with the government support through Fertiliser Input Support Programme (FISP).

He however noted that the country has achieved a bumper harvest this season amidst the effects of global recession, which negatively impacted on the economies of the world in the last couple of years.

Mbewe said the Food Reserve Agency-FRA was expected to purchase 80,000 by 50 kg of white maize from 15 satellite depots for the 2009/2010 marketing season in Kasempa district at K65, 000.

He warned farmers against selling their maize to briefcase businessmen on cheaper price.

Earlier, Kasempa district show organising committee chairperson Sikota Lutangu commended the government for its continuity in upholding FISP and the European Union sponsored project for Support to Agricultural Diversification and Food Security programme-SADFS in Kasempa.
