The winner of Miss Malawi Matofotofo, Florence Banda, says she will embark on charity fund raising activities to help the children born with disabilities.

Banda, 27, who works as Sales Executive with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) told Nyasa Times that she would also be available to do charity in aid of disadvantaged women.

“I want to work with women at all angles. I will be a role model to all the fully-figured women. I will always be available if anyone needs me maybe to help in some fund raising activities,” said married Banda with two children.

She, however, disclosed that she would start her charity with raising funds for children with disability in Lilongwe.

“I also want to raise funds to go and see the disabled children at Malingunde. You know as a mother I have a passion for kids especially the disabled who needs help,” Banda said.

She was first crowned Miss Matofotofo Lilongwe the first beauty pageant for the biggy figured women and later was crowned Miss Malawi Matofotofo at the national event.

“I was so happy when I won the contest because it’s happening for the first time here in Malawi,” she said.

Banda said as crown holder of the Miss Matofotofo Malawi she would help in checking stereotypes that the modelling industry had attached to fleshy women.

“Since we have always had the slender ones doing beauty pageants, it’s like defying the stereotypes and letting people know that big women can also show their beauty and in fact big is beautiful in our African culture,” the biggy queen said.

“I also want to encourage all the [biggy] figured women to be confident in their own skin and come out and socialise,” said Banda who beat other 12 contestants to win the crown.

She said it was not easy to win the national event after recovering from a fracture on her leg.
