GEORGE Mpombo yesterday said that the statement by community development minister Michael Kaingu that Zambia cannot hold elections next year if people know how good President Rupiah Banda is, is a vivid manifestation of political meningitis.

In an interview, Mpombo said Kaingu’s statement was an insult to Zambians because no reasonable person could say what he said.

“These are empty political hallucinations. In a democracy, people choose leaders on the basis of their performance. Kaingu’s statement does not make sense at all. Even if he wants to catch the eye of his boss, that’s not the way to go about it,” Mpombo said.

He said it was sad that Kaingu had employed himself as President Banda’s megaphone.

“I don’t understand how Kaingu can sink so low. It’s a political abomination because what achievement has Banda scored that Zambians should not hold elections next year? The man wants to change a lot of things. He is a tribalist who is spreading tribalism in the parastatal sector and also in the MMD,” Mpombo said.

“We have Rupiah Banda as acting president, Dora Siliya as MMD spokesperson and also this chap Chembe Nyangu as acting national secretary; you can’t have this thing in the party.”

Mpombo said Zambians would not brook what Kaingu was saying. He said if Kaingu was happy with what President Banda had done, he should not drag the nation into it.

“People think bootlicking is part of leadership quality. It’s a shame for Kaingu to sink so low and say what he said. He is actually encouraging mediocre leadership because Rupiah has not provided any leadership,” he bemoaned.

Mpombo said in this modern era of democracy, it was shocking and mind-boggling that a leader could stand up and say what Kaingu said.

Campaigning among women who are members of the Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMA) at Kitwe Basic School on Thursday, Kaingu said President Banda was a loving head of state who wanted every woman in the country to get meaningful empowerment from the government.
