COLOMBIAN pop star Shakira made a surprise visit to Zimbabwe on Sunday and spent the day at Gonarezhou game park in Masvingo. The famous voice behind the World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time's For Africa) landed at Buffalo Range Airport, in Chiredzi town, on a private visit.

Shakira, who was expected to fly to South Africa on Monday, was a guest of a game ranch, which is in the Gonarezhou National Park. The singer said that, through her work for Fifa, she had become aware of Zimbabwe's potential.

Gonarezhou is the country’s second largest game reserve after Hwange National Park.
The reserve is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a regional initiative that links Gonarezhou to South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

Shakira’s visit is likely to help efforts to revive the country’s tourism industry which is recovering from years of decline in the last decade.

Before political and economic strife as well as negative international publicity combined to knock the industry down, tourism was one of Zimbabwe’s major foreign currency earners with the country ranked among Africa’s leading destinations.
