PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has departed for Luena for a series of campaigns ahead of the parliamentary by- elections to be held on August 5, 2010.

Speaking on departure at Lusaka City Airport, President Banda said he was confident that the ruling MMD would scoop the parliamentary seat through its candidate, Mwangala Maopu.

“Elections being what they are, things can come out differently, but we are very hopeful we will get Luena. The Vice-President (George Kunda) has been there and we have worked very hard and we believe our work will pay off,” he said.

And President Banda has told off those criticizing government’s decision to go ahead with the procurement of mobile hospitals at a cost of US $53 million acquired as a loan from China.

Various stakeholders, including opposition political leaders, cooperating partners and ordinary Zambian citizens opposed government’s plans to borrow US $53 million for the procurement f mobile hospitals from China Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC).

“The other people (criticizing the transaction)… I’ll say it’s none of their business, we are the government in this country and we decide what is best for the people,” said Banda.

State House special assistant for press and public relations, Dickson Jere, said President Banda is traveling to Western Province on a two-day working visit.
