UN Rep calls for improved education in Zambia

UNITED Nations resident co-odinator Macleod Nyirongo has called for improved education in the country to help offer life skills to the youth. And Nyirongo has said it is good that all political parties in Zambia have rejected violence in their campaigns because it is not part of democracy.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province permanent secretary Villie Lombanya, Nyirongo said there was need to improve education in the country especially that Africa as a continent was lagging behind on education in science and technology.

“We are here to make sure that Zambia achieves the MDGs Millennium Development Goals. And one goal that we are looking at is hunger. Agriculture was booming last year, who was creating this? Is it the small or commercial farmers? This is what we should look at as well,” Nyirongo said.

“Jobs are being created, what we need to search for is where these jobs are being created and how far these jobs are being created. We need to find out these answers.”

Nyirongo said Zambia had good governance because of the democracy it enjoys.

He said Zambia had held a number of elections and many people participated, subsequently exercising their rights.

“Looking at what happened in Mufumbwe, I can say that it’s good that all political parties in Zambia have rejected violence in their campaigns because violence is not part of democracy. And the most good thing is that political parties are able to correct the situation by taking such things to court, this is very good,” he said.

“Violence should not be condoned, political leaders have said no to violence. We expect their cadres to do the same. There is no need to fight because of elections. Fighting should be through the ballot box.”

Nyirongo called on political leaders to educate their cadres on how they should carry themselves during and after elections to prevent violence taking place.
