AMBASSADORS and High Commissioners from European Union (EU) member countries accredited to Zambia have expressed happiness with the peaceful and well-organised manner in which the Chifubu and Luena parliamentary by-elections were conducted.

In a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, EU member countries together with the Norwegian Embassy, a non-member of the EU, commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other agencies.

“The European Union Heads of Mission have noted the recent by-elections in Chifubu and Luena constituencies and would like to congratulate the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Zambian Police Service and the people of Chifubu and Luena on a peaceful and well managed election,” the statement read.

“The Embassy of Norway aligns itself with this local EU statement.”

The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) retained the Chifubu parliamentary by-election while Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD)’s Charles Milupi, a former parliamentarian for Luena also retained the seat during the polls held on August 5, 2010.

In Chifubu, PF’s Susan Kawandami beat MMD’s Frank Ng’ambi after she polled 6,976 against the latter’s 4,539 votes. In Luena, Milupi won after he got 3,688 votes against MMD’s Mwangala Maopu who got 2,800 votes, while United Party for National Development (UPND)’s Muyunda Ililonga only got 1,806 votes.
