PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda’s desperation for the presidency is sickening, MMD member Nason Msoni has said. Announcing his intention to challenge President Banda at the next MMD convention, Msoni said there were currently a lot of internal differences in the ruling party.
“It’s obvious that President Banda’s schemes to address all the provincial conferences is meant to manipulate the party constitution so that he is adopted as the sole candidate for the party presidency.
There are no positions in the MMD reserved for individuals; everyone should be subjected to an election,” he said. Msoni vowed that no amount of intimidation would deter him from standing against President Banda, saying he had survived violence when he challenged the late president Levy Mwanawasa at the party's last convention. “Anyone advocating for violence at the next convention should know that their days are numbered. We shall not allow the rights of citizens to be violated,” he said.
Msoni expressed disgust that former president Frederick Chiluba had been mute on the MMD constitution when he knew very well that the constitution was being violated. And Msoni has asked Zambians not to give President Banda another term in office, saying the country needed a leader who would sacrifice his personal gains for Zambia’s development.
“In my view, President Banda shouldn’t go for another term in office; he needs to rest. These times call for a president who is willing to sacrifice for the people. We need a president of Zambian affairs, not a president of foreign affairs as the situation currently stands,” said Msoni.
