POLICE have arrested five people in connection with the recent fracas that ensued when police officers disrupted a meeting convened by sympathisers of the Barotse Freedom Movement (BFM) in Mongu.
Western Province police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba confirmed from Mongu that the five had not yet been charged as investigations into the matter were still ongoing. Mweemba said BFM coordinator Grace Muyangana, who went into hiding shortly after the fracas, had been picked up together with her husband.
“So far we have in our custody about five but I can’t give more details,” Mweemba said on Friday.
He disputed reports that police officers ‘detained’ the Muyanganas’ children before they picked up their parents.
When asked to confirm assertions that the couple was detained separately in Senanga and Kaoma, Mweemba said he could not confirm that for security reasons.
“What I can confirm is that they are detained,” said Mweemba.
