WILLA Mung’omba yesterday said it is extremely important for Zambians to register as voters. Willa, who attended the swearing-in ceremony of his young brother Given as deputy science and technology minister at State House, said it was key for people to register because elections could be won with a difference of one vote.

“It is very important that people register as voters and express their will at every election. And I hope you guys are encouraging them to register,” said Willa the former Constitution Review Commission chairperson.

Asked to comment on the MMD’s narrow victory in the Mpulungu by-elections, Willa said elections were all about competition.

He said the MMD had worked hard to keep the Mpulungu seat and the opposition needed to work harder to get it.

On Given’s appointment as deputy minister, Willa said the Mung’omba family was not a dynasty despite their involvement in Zambian politics.

He said people joined politics by choice.

Willa said the family was pleased with Given’s victory in Mpulungu and the honour of being appointed deputy minister.

“We hope that he can live up to the expectation of the people. The important thing is not just being appointed but delivery of services to the Zambian people. That is what we expect him to do as a family. If he fails, then he has failed us,” said Willa.

And Given said there was need for the MMD to address their weaknesses in Mpulungu.
He said the MMD lost in the central parts of Mpulungu Constituency because of problems such as water supply.

Also sworn in yesterday by President Rupiah Banda were Domiciano Mulenga as national coordinator at the Disaster Management Unit, Lieutenant General Samuel Mapala as Ambassador to Italy and Daniel Bowazi as North Western Province permanent secretary.
