FR Miha Drevensek says the MMD government has refused to incorporate democratic clauses in the proposed constitution because it is scared of its own shadow.

In an interview yesterday, Fr Miha, who is Mission Press director, said the government was afraid of next year’s elections because they had failed to fulfil their promises to the people.

“They have failed to deliver in 20 years. They promised the people and now people are frustrated because if I am a good leader, why should I fear to put 50 per cent plus one in the constitution and why should I fear a referendum?” Fr Miha asked.

He said the government had manipulated the people.

“This is the most unfortunate situation because being elected by a two-thirds majority is the desire of any right-thinking politician but it is unfortunate that most politicians spend time discussing one another instead of discussing policy matters,” Fr Miha said.

And Copperbelt acting PF provincial chairman Chibwe Mulenga said the MMD would not easily manipulate next year’s elections despite the exclusion of the 50 per cent plus one clause from the proposed constitution.

Mulenga, a former parliamentarian for Chifubu, said PF was capable of winning any election with or without the 50 per cent plus one clause.

“My advice to PF members is not to panic over the refusal to send the clause to the referendum because this party is capable of winning any election,” said Mulenga.

“MMD is not a factor in Zambian politics anymore. Even if they rig, they will not succeed this time around since the tools they use to rig are known.
