A KITWE clergyman has advised Zambians to vote for leaders who will encourage people to work hard and rid the country of corruption. Fr John Lesa, the Sacred Heart Parish priest, urged fellow priests and all Christians not to remain silent amidst rampant selfishness and corruption by the political leaders.

“Do not just say we want change but change must bring in a leadership that will mobilise all of us to pick our tools and work hard, get rid of corruption. Do not say things will be fine in future no, time to talk is now when there is too much poverty and the confusion surrounding the constitution-making process,” Fr Lesa said during the Eucharistic celebration on Sunday.

He said it was unfair that people wanted to restrict priests to the pulpit when they were in direct contact with the poverty-stricken masses and the general citizenry.
Fr Lesa said there was too much selfishness by the leadership in the country, which had continued to take the country backwards.

“Karl Marx once said ‘religion is the opium of the people’ meaning that we Christians like saying things will be better in future. This is just promoting laziness amongst ourselves but time to speak is now and people should not say ‘no, priests cannot speak about constitutional reforms or poverty’. This is our obligation,” said Fr Lesa.
