VICE-President George Kunda says Michael Sata and Hakainde Hichilema are desperate to get into power so that they can plunder the over US$2 billion reserves at the central bank.

Speaking at Livingstone International Airport yesterday when he arrived to address the 13th ZCTU quadrennial congress, Vice-President Kunda said PF leader Sata and his UPND counterpart Hichilema liked dollars.

“The kwacha is stable, foreign exchange reserves are over US$2 billion in the Bank of Zambia. This is why the opposition is desperate to go to State House and take over. That’s why they are desperate because everything looks bright,” Vice-President Kunda said.

“You know HH and Sata, they like dollars too much. So they want to come and plunder the US$2 billion in the reserves. We are looking after the resources prudently but these two people, if they come into power, Zambia will be plundered. We will not allow them.”

He said the MMD government had performed well and developed the economy.

Vice-President Kunda said copper production was expected to increase by 2014 and the country would next year receive a lot of revenue from the mining sector.

He said the country’s future looked bright and there would be more money in the treasury from next year onwards.

“We will not allow the treasury to be run by these two greedy people. But as you have seen, their chances of winning are slim. Members are deserting them due to poor leadership in their parties,” he said.

He said the MMD was ahead especially that it had held three provincial conferences successfully.
Vice-President Kunda said Hichilema’s future was bleak because UPND parliamentarians were MMD allies.

“I don’t talk about MPs in UPND because they are helping us recruit people. Ask government chief whip Mr VJ Mwaanga; we have their names but won’t mention them for fear of victimisation,” he said.
Vice-President Kunda commended Southern Province for convincing Alice Simango to get back to the party.

Simango yesterday defected from the PF to re-join the MMD.

Vice-President Kunda said he had left a trail of destruction on the Copperbelt in the opposition parties.

“The MPs there especially in Chingola they are licking their wounds, they are crying. Even there, we received one of our members Mrs Jean Phiri; she is back. PF is slowly turning into a shell. Members are leaving every day in large numbers,” said Vice-President Kunda.

Vice-President Kunda is expected to officially open the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions quadrennial conference today.
