People enjoy supporting thieves - Musosha

PEOPLE enjoy supporting thieves and not honest individuals, says Chrispine Musosha. And Musosha said he was informed during the recently held Mansa district MMD conference that President Rupiah Banda had given instructions for him not to contest any election in the party.

Reacting to the decision by the MMD in Luapula Province to bar him from contesting the position of Mansa MMD district chairperson last Monday, Musosha, who is education deputy minister and Mansa-Central MMD parliamentarian, said he was hated because of his honesty and hardwork.

“People who are honest, people who are hard workers are never liked. Of course, some people enjoy supporting thieves…it is unfortunate that we can go to that level,” he said.

Musosha said he was told by the chairperson of the conference, MMD Luapula Province youth chairperson David Chanda, that President Banda had given instructions that he should not be allowed to contest any position.

He said President Banda had never communicated the decision to him.

Musosha said he did not understand how the new Mansa district executive committee was ushered into office because most of those who formed the electoral-college had walked out of the conference.

He confirmed that he was very upset with the decision to bar him, such that he even grabbed the ballot papers for the elections.

“I said ‘we are not going to vote until we resolve this because as far as I am concerned the President had never written to me that I can’t contest any position’. I said ‘no, until you call him, until we call the national secretary’,” Musosha said.

“We called the national secretary he said ‘no ask Mr Mike Mulongoti’. We called Honourable Mulongoti, the one who was chairing that meeting refused to talk to Honourable Mulongoti.”

But Chanda said Musosha was barred from standing because he did not meet all the qualification rules of 1999. He said Musosha did not qualify because he was not a delegate to the conference. Chanda said the other reason was that President Banda relieved him of the position of Luapula Province acting chairperson.

“At the time of scrutinising nomination papers we didn’t receive any instruction from the president and national secretary that he should stand,” said Chanda.

Musosha, had last week called for the dismissal of Luapula Province minister Dr Boniface Kawimbe and provincial permanent secretary Jazzman Chikwakwa for failing to work and provide development despite government giving them all the resources.

But Citizens Forum executive director Simon Kabanda said the levels of intolerance, particularly in the political circles had reached unacceptable levels.

He said those who offered divergent views were either expelled, disciplined or barred from contesting for positions.

Kabanda said as a result of intolerance to divergent views, the government was now unleashing law enforcement agencies to pursue people like PF leader Michael Sata, Fr Frank Bwalya and George Mpombo.

He said those who were intolerant should humble themselves by respecting democracy.

Kabanda said the country was heading in a very dangerous direction if the current levels of intolerance were not abated.
