THE judiciary should be properly safeguarded because failure to do so will result in compromise, says Fr Mambwe Mpasa.
In an interview on Sunday following concerns raised by Chief Justice Ernest Sakala that the judiciary was poorly funded, Fr Mpasa, who is Mansa Diocese Vicar General, said the consequences of failing to properly fund the institution would be terrible.
"The delivery of justice might be compromised and this calls for some serious concern…that is why the judiciary should be adequately funded because justice is not cheap and all those who want it must work for it," said Fr Mpasa.
He said it was unfortunate that the judiciary had experienced cases of bribery in the past.
Fr Mpasa said there was need for political will to protect the judiciary in the country.
"Let them (government) govern by protecting the integrity of the judiciary by adequately funding the institution and appointing people of high integrity," he said.
And Fr Mpasa said there was need for Zambians this year to concentrate on how they would develop the country instead of politicking.
He said there was need to raise other sectors of the country's economy.
"I also wish the year 2011 to be a year where people will not tolerate cadres threatening violence, we want to see to it that the country prospers economically," said Fr Mpasa.
