THE treason accused police officer yesterday appeared for mention in the Lusaka magistrates’ court. Maybin Sikwa, 54, of house number D156 Chelston police camp, is charged with treason contrary to section 43 (1)(c) of the Penal Code chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
It is alleged that Sikwa, between October 23, 2010 and January 12 this year in Senanga District, being a citizen, jointly and while acting together with unknown people, endeavoured or prepared to procure by force the setting up of the Barotseland State in Western Province, which forms part of Zambia.
Sikwa appeared before principal resident magistrate Sharon Newa.
However, a public prosecutor told the court that the state had not yet received instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to commit Sikwa to the High Court.
Sikwa’s lawyer Chad Muleza told the court that the defence comprised prominent lawyer Roger Chongwe, Nelly Mutti and Muleya Kashewe.
There are 22 other people who are facing the same charge following the recent nolle prosequi which the state entered in respect of 92-year-old Maxwell Mututwa.
Sikwa’s case comes up on February 14 for mention.
