MMD is the most brutal government sponsoring violence to stop people from demanding development, says a 65-year-old mother from Mongu. In an interview, Ireen Njala, a grandmother of 11-year-old Chilemu Nyambe, the boy who was shot in the stomach by the police during the recent Mongu fracas, said it was now clear that President Rupiah Banda's government hated the Lozis.

Njala, who complained of lack of food at her home and widespread poverty in Western Province, said there had been riots in the country before but people were not murdered in cold blood the way innocent citizens were killed in Mongu for demanding development.

“They (police) shot my grandchild in his grandfather's backyard and they offered no help. What sort of government is this that sponsors violence and kills its own people who demand development in their area. We've seen riots before but people were not killed but now this useless government is killing us,” she said.

Njala (above) reminded President Rupiah Banda and his government that time for voting was coming this year.

“I can tell you that we're ready to remove MMD because they hate us, they have killed us,” said Njala as she held back her tears.

She said God would punish President Banda and his government for the blood that was spilled which would continue to haunt them.

She complained that no government or MMD official visited her when her grandchild was admitted to hospital for four weeks as he battled for his life.

She said it was a miracle that her grandchild survived, saying when she was informed about the shooting she feared the child had died.

“I suffered like a refugee in my own country because I had nothing to eat and could not bath. I suffered further because I was informed that my grandchild had died and was rushed to hospital after he was shot in the head. He was taken to theatre were doctors performed an operation and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he stayed for two weeks. After that we were referred to the wards for a week and discharged. What can an 11-year-old boy do to threaten security,” she questioned.

And Nyambe, the boy who was shot said his survival was merely by the grace of God.
