Government says it has enough money to ensure that conflicts that have rocked Libya do not affect the operations of Zamtel Company Limited.
Responding to a question from Kafulafuta member of parliament George Mpombo, who wanted to know if Zamtel, whose 75 per cent stake belongs to Libyan-owned LAP Green, was affected following the freeze on Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his family's assets by the international community and the United Nations Security Council during the oral answer session in parliament, Vice-president Kunda said that fears were largely speculative.
Mpombo said that it was clear that Libya, the country that owns the multi African communication company LAP Green, was crippled following the happenings in that country which have forced some countries to freeze its assets as well as last week's decision to impose a ‘no-fly zone’ for military aircraft over the country's airspace.
“This (LAP Green) company's assets in most countries have been frozen. The United Nations as you know has declared Libya as a no-fly Zone meaning Libya is completely crippled. Can the Vice- President assure this House that Zamtel will not be affected,” Mpombo said.
Vice-President George Kunda simply responded by saying, ‘That company (ZAMTEL) is doing well and money is available in the country’.”
And earlier, responding to Lusaka Central member of parliament Guy Scott who wanted to know what government's position would be on the sanctions imposed on Libya, Vice-President Kunda said he would not engage in speculation over the matter.
The United Nations Security Council on Thursday backed a resolution authorising a no-fly zone and all measures necessary over Libya to protect civilians.
Under the no-fly zone, only military aircraft are forbidden to fly in Libya’s airspace.
