THE usage of NAPSA by the MMD government to raise funds for President Rupiah Banda's campaigns amounts to stealing public funds, says Charles Milupi.

And Southern Province Patriotic Front chairperson Joseph Akafumba says the MMD would have to account for the money they are getting using the pension statutory body, National Pension Scheme Authority.

In an interview Milupi, who is Alliance for Democratic Development (ADD) president, said NAPSA was an institution created to look after people’s pension funds.

“NAPSA looks after people money and now the MMD wants to make it an investment machine for President Banda's campaigns. That is criminal! It is stealing money from the people,” Milupi said.

He said the MMD government must have provided investment to the Authority so that it could effectively be able to pay people on time in time of need.

“They should have provided a leadership to allow the fund to grow so that there can be more money to pay off claims. Getting money from NAPSA is criminal,” Milupi said.

And Akafumba said the MMD's “scandalous” transaction at NAPSA to raise campaign funds was theft of public funds.

He said the MMD was now desperate as the party knew it had reached the end of its political life in government.

“Their time is over and they have now turned to stealing. The NAPSA saga is theft of public funds,” he said Akafumba said stealing of NAPSA funds and ordering the police to stop the opposition from holding rallies was also part of rigging the elections ahead of this year's presidential and parliamentary polls.

Akafumba said the MMD was siphoning money from government institutions to fund its activities and later claim that the institutions were not functioning well but sell them for their benefit.

He said rigging of elections was a long process which even starts with the unequal coverage by the state-owned media to the opposition parties.

The MMD members recently expressed concern over what they termed “scandalous” transactions at NAPSA, which President Banda is allegedly using to raise to use to raise campaign funds.

The members have exposed a scam where NAPSA is due to acquire land from Meanwood at a cost of US$15 million.
